Did you know that YouTube is the second-biggest search engine, next to Google?
This guide will teach you how to easily build a YouTube channel for your brand so you can start reaching even more customers.
YouTube Business Channel Setup
- Sign into your Google account.
- To create your channel, create a Brand Account.
- Add your business name and click Create.
Verify Your Account
- While logged into your Google account, browse to https://www.youtube.com/verify.
- Follow the instructions for verifying your account.
Customize Your Brand Account
- Click on the default profile photo.
- Upload your business logo (Note: Your logo should be 800 x 800 pixels for the best quality.).
- Click on the cover image.
- Upload a cover (photo, custom illustration, etc.) for your profile (Note: Your cover should be 2560 x 1440 pixels for the best quality.).
- Click on the “plus” icon at the bottom of the page.
- Click Work contact info and fill in as much information as you’re comfortable sharing publicly (Note: The more info you’re willing to share the better.).
- Click the Hidden icon/link and set it to Visible.
- Repeat steps 6-7 for Sites, adding your website, social media profiles, etc.
Customize Your Brand Channel
- Go back to the channel selector.
- Select your newly-created brand account.
- Click your account icon in the top-right of your screen.
- Click Your Channel.
- Click Customize Channel.
- Click Add channel art.
- Select the Your photos tab.
- Under Scrapbook Photos, choose the same image that you used for your Cover in the previous steps (Note: If your image doesn’t look good across all of the devices shown, I recommend creating a new version of your image, so your Cover image remains untouched.).
- Click Select if you are happy with your image.
Configure Default Channel Settings
- Go to your YouTube Studio.
- From the left menu, select Settings.
- Select defaults.
- General > Specify your currency
- Channel > Basic > Enter any keywords (tags) that you can think of that might ever need to be added to your videos, as it’s always easier to remove them than remember to add them. Also, set your Country. (Note: You can always go back and edit this list as things evolve with your business.).
- Channel > Branding > Following the instructions, add a watermark image. (Note: Images must be square, with a minimum of 150×150 pixels, and less than 1MB in size. I recommend that you use a transparent background rather than a solid one and include just one color in the image. This will help the image be less distracting, especially on small screens.).
- Upload Defaults > Essentials > Title > I use this setting to set up a template to know what to insert where, using something like “[keyword/tag] Guide – How to [keyword/tag] using [keyword/tag]”
- Upload Defaults > Essentials > Description > I use this setting to set up a template to know what to insert where, using something like “In this #[keyword/tag] video I show you how to [keyword/tag] using #[keyword/tag] and [keyword/tag] in order to [keyword/tag].” . I also include links to important areas of the Club website, social media links, and/or CTAs (Calls-to-action). Here is a great resource from YouTube, on how to Write smart descriptions.
- Upload Defaults > Extras > Tags > You can put the same keywords/tags you used before, under the Channel > Basic default settings.
- Upload Defaults > Advanced > Choose the Category and the Language that best fits the majority of your videos.
- Community > Defaults > I recommend enabling all areas on this section to Hold potentially inappropriate comments for review.
- Other settings > Advanced channel settings > Advertisements > Disable
- Other settings > Advanced channel settings > Google Analytics > Add your tracking ID.
Upload Your Video
SEO Optimize Your Video
- Staying on YouTube Studio, under the Basic Info tab, add any new tags/keywords and remove any tags/keywords that were pulled in by the default settings, but they are not relevant to this video. (Note: Tags are your keywords for the video, so include as many relevant tags as you can so search engines like Google can identify the subject matter.).
- Title > Add a title for your video, that includes your keywords and accurately represents what your video is about.
- Description > Add a title for your video, that includes your keywords, relevant hashtags, social media links, website links, and accurately represents what your video is about.
- Tags > Add all of the tags that are applicable to your video.
- Thumbnail > From the thumbnails that are auto-generated, choose the thumbnail that best represents your video or upload a custom thumbnail. (Note: I cover this later in this guide.).
- Playlist > Add the video to the desired playlist.

- Comments > I like to allow comments, but hold potentially inappropriate comments for moderation.
- Category > Set an appropriate category for your video.
Note: While I typically leave the rest of the advanced settings untouched, I recommend that you take a close look at these settings, as they relate to your particular video.
Custom Video Thumbnails
I like to create a custom thumbnail to use across the major topics of our videos, in some cases, it may make sense to just use a single thumbnail image across all videos.
Custom Video Thumbnail Guidelines
Keep in mind the following, when creating custom video thumbnails.
- Use a resolution of 1280×720 (with a minimum width of 640 pixels).
- Use JPG, GIF, or PNG image formats.
- Keep the image file under the 2MB limit.
- Use a 16:9 aspect ratio as that is the most used ratio across platforms.
- Ensure the images comply with YouTube community guidelines.
Create Custom Video Thumbnails
Your custom thumbnail image should be as large as possible, as it will be used as the preview image in the embedded player.
I recommend your custom thumbnails have a resolution of 1280×720 (with a minimum width of 640 pixels), be uploaded in image formats such as JPG, GIF, or PNG, and remain under the 2MB limit.
Try to use a 16:9 aspect ratio as that is what’s widely used in YouTube players and previews.
