Seven Sisters Alumnae Association

Directory / Store:  Students · Events · Jobs · Housing · Businesses

Project Overview

Jennifer M. was looking to build a membership directory for a group of women’s colleges (Seven Sisters). Having already built a membership directory with the MyListing theme, we thought it would be the perfect solution for her. So, we reached out to her and gave her our recommendation.

After some discussions, we moved forward together on a project with the goal being to implement a solution that allowed for multiple listing types (Alumnae & Students, Housing, Job Openings, etc.), an eCommerce store and was easy to manage.

MyListing fit the bill perfectly! Jennifer has a thriving membership directory with over 3,000 members at the time of this writing.

Mylisting Club Work Seven Sisters Alumnae Association Project Overview

Our Client

The Seven Sisters is a name given to seven highly selective and prestigious liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States that are historically women’s colleges.

Five of the seven institutions continue to offer all-female undergraduate programs: Barnard College, Bryn Mawr College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, and Wellesley College.

All seven schools were founded between 1837 and 1889. Four are in Massachusetts, two are in New York, and one is in Pennsylvania.

Build Overview

Using not much more than the theme itself and the Elementor page builder plugin, a membership directory was created.

An “explore” page was created for each listing type, in addition to a catch-all explore page. The explore pages provide search, filtering, and map location functionality for each all listings.

Any design gaps were filled in using Elementor Pro and hand-coded CSS. We went with the WooCommerce Membership and WooCommerce Subscriptions plugins to restrict access where needed an to offer up monthly payment plans.

The eCommerce store was built by piggybacking off of the already-required WooCommerce plugin and adding the WooCommerce USPS Shipping plugin to automatically calculate shipping rates.

Geeky Notes

MyListing comes bundled with the Contact Form 7 plugin. While the plugin is widely used in the WordPress community, its install numbers of dropping due to its clunky interface, its loading of assets (CSS and JS) on every post/page, and because there are better solutions out there.

Using Elementor Pro’s form widget, we were able to reproduce the functionality of Contact Form 7, as it relates to the MyListing theme. This reproduction allowed us to remove Contact Form 7 from the website altogether.

Check out our guide on how to Replace Contact Form 7 with Elementor Pro.
